Artist Leora Lutz Featured on Apartment Therapy

Sugarhigh_1 Once again, Apartment Therapy - one of my all-time favorite blogs (see January 24th '06 gush-post) - has proven it's excellent taste by highlighting Los Angeles artist Leora Lutz' City Silhouette Paintings:

"Leora Lutz knows what's up. She's captured and painted a series of silhouettes showcasing the identifying outlines of the Los Angeles landscape in a spectrum of colours that may or may not sometimes appear in our city's skies. These 5" x 5" painting "began as an experiment in 2003", fueled by the memories of summer nights and the 1980's art scene, resulting in some darn eye pleasing artwork that will provide a glorious view whether the the forecast is for clear skies or not."

We couldn't agree more!

Click here to view her paintings and make your walls happy!

Blogging About Art

This post from 9Rules is so intriguing, I just have to copy and paste it:

*****

At the beginning of 2006 Barry Neuman, art dealer, remarked to Artnet Magazine:

I think it’s a safe bet that there will be 50 to 60 new and bona fide (i.e., seriously authored by qualified people) art world blogs by the end of the year.

… to which Kriston Capps, writer for the Smithsonian’s Eye Level blog responded:

“Seriously authored by qualified people,” [is] a sentiment totally contrary to the esprit de corps of the blogosphere. What’s in fact great about most blogs is that they are nonseriously authored by nonqualified people. By the best count I’ve read, there are around 400–500 art blogs in the nation. Assuming even half of those are updated regularly, that amounts to a virtual library of information about artists, trends, and institutions. Even if not all these blogs are of the highest quality, the cream rises—and distributes the best information from the lesser-known blogs. To a certain extent, blogs survive by this network. (…)

(…) Artists, professionals, and enthusiasts writing about art are in fact part of the “actual, hands-on, real-world art scene.”

*****
As someone who reads dozens and dozens of blogs everyday, I am sort of taken back by a simplified statement imagining 50-60 "seriously qualified" art world blogs. Is that to say, that in the entire modern world Barry Newman believes that there is only a handful of "seriously qualified" art experts in the world, and even fewer who have a grasp on new media and it's power to reach masses of people?

To be certain, these are two experts in their own right holding this debate. But still, limiting "experts" and what constitutes legitimately "impacting the actual, hands-on, real-world art scene, locally and internationally" is all-together turning a nose to the real-world art scene and dismissing it completely.

For that matter, what is his definition of "real-world" and if the thousands of active art collectors in the world don't apply - to whom is this impactive information going?

I encourage you to read Eye Level's Forward Motion by Kriston Capps and Artnet's Predictions For 2006 and decide for yourself...

Exciting New Work By Elias Telles

I just had the pleasure of visiting Elias Telles' studio in Montebello last Thursday.  We went to our favorite lunch spot - Jimmy's, and then spent the rest of the afternoon talking about and photographing all his amazing new work.

It's really exciting to see Elias take off in some new directions - I truly believe he is one of the most unique folk artists out there, and such a treasure to our Southern California heritage (which is a major part of what makes him so unique!)

Anyway, Elias has been exploring nudes for a few months now, and we're getting great response.  Though he doesn't study too many artists, and has never taken a class, he'll tell you without hesitation that he wishes he could paint like Van Gogh.

His nude series is certainly an homage to his muse - and I love the allegories he weaves into the paintings.

Additionally, Elias is painting really small - like under 5 inches small.  I've been at him for a couple years to paint BIG, but I'll take small for now - they're engaging and mysterious little works!

Virginguadaloupe Honkeytonkii

As a second major departure, Elias has started painting skeletons - this is a very Dia de las Muertes move for him...one which we've spoken about at length together (out of frustration) because he has been criticized by some Los Angeles galleries as "not being Hispanic enough" in his work.

The beauty about Elias' folk art is that he isn't "anything" enough.  He's American, he's Californian, he's of Mexican descent, he's a tradesman & a soldier - and all these things are portrayed honestly and beautifully in his work.

Needless to say, it was another lovely afternoon.  I've been cropping his photos all day, and hope to get loads of new work on the site very soon - as I know you all have been anxious.

Beep In A Week: Vol 4 // Everyone Is A Celebrity

Well the Beep Fam just grew by leaps and bounds this week, thanks to Daily Candy and their fab feature about beep Gallery artist Plasticgod; which is only fitting as it's award season and we're being deluged with red carpet madness.

Welcome all new Beepsters!
I've been having a great time chatting with so many nice new friends this week, and thanks & congrats to all who have purchased new art by Plasticgod!

Let's take this down to Beep town y'all:

You Simply Must...
* Well naturally you must get yourself some Daily Candy if you haven't already. They've been kind enough to feature artist Leora Lutz, designer Nappa Studio and now artist Plasticgod - so they obviously have great taste. It's a fun read with your morning coffee.
* Make your own tartan plaid. We all had fun doing last week's Simpsonomaker,
but using the Tartanomatic to create my own personal Aunt Beep tartan is oddly satisfying in a Braveheart sort of way. Best of all, you can buy your new plaid! I think I see a Beep Tartan blanket in my future...

T
hat Is So Beep...

On Saturday we had breakfast at Urth Cafe. I haven't been there in a while, and I forgot how great the food is.

Do yourself a favor - take a 1/2 hour and sip a Spanish Latte outside in the sunshine at Urth Cafe. The Spanish Latte is quite possibly one of the top 3 reasons why I will never give up caffeine, and is - without a doubt - a perfect coffee drink. The coffee is strong, the milk is sweet, the foam is thick. To future visitors of our lovely city: for better or worse you can't get more "LA" than Urth, so add it to your itinerary.
Be Sure To Note...
*Tuesday is Valentines Day. Don't get down on the details, just tell everyone
you love them - that's the Aunt Beep way!

Be forewarned: due to the strength of their coffee, drinking a large may induce heart palpitations, excessive perspiration and bouts of paranoia, but it's totally worth it.

Good Fortune...I must be dipping into the well of good Chinese fortunes. We barely skidded
home from work in time for LOST this week, so California Wok was our only option.
Sunday Dinner...The Super Bowl was boring, but this pasta dish was not. I love anything with
crab...it seems so luxurious!

As I have the pleasure of working with individuals who are both amazingly creative and hard working, I spend a lot of time discussing/reiterating what people can do, so this rings especially true:

"A great pleasure in life is doing what others say you can't"

I could easily pontificate on this, but I think you can get it. I'm glad I was raised by parents who always taught me there wasn't anything I couldn't do. The result is a life-long story of adventures and misadventures to be sure, but so much better than being trapped by someone else's limitations!

We ate so much pasta I couldn't even think about desert. But I was supposed to make roasted nectarines stuffed with ricotta cheese. I'll include the recipe. We'll see if I get to it this week (now that we have all these nectarines and cheese!), or maybe one of you will beat me to it!
Salad: Maiche & endive lettuce with pine nuts. Simple balsamic dressing.
Main: Thin Spaghetti with Crab, Asparagus and Sun-Dried Tomatoes from Colorado Colore
Desert: Ricotta Stuffed Oven Roasted Nectarines from Gale Gand
Click Here for Full Recipes! (always on the beep Blog!)
Bringing It Back...I heard this in Trader Joes the other day. Everyone was singing to it. Which proves that just about all of us love Dolly and Kenny.
Islands in the Stream
Islands in the Stream
(plus, it reminds me of Katie and Chad and one of the best 1st wedding dances ever)

You walk that red carpet people, and I'll see you next week.

Love,

Aunt Beep

PLASTICGOD featured on Daily Candy today

The fab folks at DailyCandy.com wrote a great feature on beep Gallery artist PLASTICGOD today:

...Doug Murphy, the artist also known as Plasticgod. His signature style riffs on our obsession with fame, turning celebrities du jour into two-dimensional pop-art icons.
I'm loving all the new Beepsters who have joined the fam, (welcome!). It's been great fun chatting with those who are now getting their very own Personal Icon Portrait by our very own 21st Century Warhol.
Thanks Daily Candy for once again giving some love to Aunt Beep. We love love LOVE you back! Muah!
