Rauschenberg Fever

I have Rauschenberg fever. I was blessed to attend the Robert Rauschenberg lecture at Pacific Design Center last Sunday May 21st. He's an amazing man and the talk made me feel born again.
Here is a review of the current MOCA exhibition from one of my favorite art writers, Edward Goldman.
Don't miss this show. It's monumental.
Amen.

Scorching Heat of Rauschenberg Summer in L.A.

Let's talk about the much-anticipated cultural event that finally rolled into town over the weekend--and I'm not talking about The Da Vinci Code, that monumental bore I had to flee from after an hour.

The event to really get excited about is the absolutely superb exhibition, "Robert Rauschenberg: Combines", which originated at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and just opened here at MOCA.  For Paul Schimmel, curator of this exhibition and one of the authors of the catalogue, this whole project is, no doubt, a labor of love.  The installation of the exhibition is nothing short of brilliant, a theater presentation full of suspense and intrigue.  As MOCA's chief curator, Schimmel is intimately familiar with the eleven Combines his museum owns, the largest number of these prized Rauschenberg works in anyone's collection.

For ten years, between 1954 and 1964, the artist, it seems, could do no wrong; in a state of sustained fury -- or could it be a state of grace? -- Rauschenberg was churning out one masterpiece after another, and all of them of a kind never seen before.  They were a combination of painting and sculpture, and he called them 'Combines.'  He threw in stuffed chickens and a goat, old socks and dirty linen, rubber tires and a whole panoply of electric appliances, and then, in a baptism of color applied with coarse brushstrokes, the artist transformed this junkyard detritus into sizzling icons of frightening, awe-inspiring power.  How anyone could sustain his creativity at such an unbelievable fever pitch for a whole decade is beyond me.

I definitely plan to see this exhibition any chance I get.  Today's program is only my initial gut reaction to this fascinating, multi-layered exhibition.  The next three months in Los Angeles should be proclaimed 'Rauschenberg summer' as we all are going to bask in the heat of his genius.  But please, be warned: it's possible to get scorched by Rauschenberg's art.

Beautiful Show & Art Opening SAT 4/30 in Chinatown

"Pattern" April 30 - June 4, 2005 Reception for the artists: APRIL 30th, Saturday 7 - 10 pm Bamboo Lane / Revisited www.galleryrevisited.com 418 Bamboo Lane. Los Angeles, Ca 90012 - Chinatown. 213.620.1188

3 artists interpret literal & conceptual pattern.
Fumiko Amano Michiko Yao Jessica Robbins

Skylight Room: "More Patterns" - coinciding group show.

There is a common thread that moves through the work of these three artists to bring the flow of the exhibit full circle in concept & in representation. One focuses on line, the purpose of line & the function of the narrative represented. The second begins with the function of the narrative, then the purpose of the process. The third focuses on the purpose of the process & the focus of the lines/shapes.

For this exhibit, the artists were given the word "pattern" & some prompts relating to; patterns for sewing, patterns in social events or conversation, patterns in our surroundings…then left to create a new body of work with "pattern" in mind. The serendipity of curation lies within inviting these three artists to participate in the show & watching the unintentional synchronicity of the collective unconscious, resulting in a challenging exhibit with a common thread running through it (no pun intended).

**This show is in conjunction with Project by Project for CAST.
Project by Project is a non-profit organization that sponsors & promotes a different worthy cause each year. This year their beneficiary is CAST - The Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking. 80% of the people that CAST helps are women who have been brought to this country under false pretense. Many work in the garment industry or escort services.

Bamboo Lane / Revisited will be donating partial proceeds of all art sales in the gallery for duration of the exhibit to benefit CAST.

- Leora Lutz, Gallery Director.

Bamboo Lane / Revisited is located in Chinatown. On Bamboo Lane, a street alley North of College, East of Broadway. North on Broadway, pass College, make a left at the Phoenix Bakery Parking lot. Walk 1/2 way down- on your left...Big green building.
